After a successful whitetail deer hunt in Texas and before heading to Arizona for my next adventure, I decided to take an exciting train trip across North America on Amtrak’s famous lines. This journey promises incredible views, unique stops, and a bit of relaxation before the next hunt.
My adventure begins next Monday at Longview Station, Texas, where I’ll board Amtrak’s Texas Eagle. This line runs overnight into Chicago, giving me the chance to enjoy the comfort of my sleeper car—meals and a cozy bed included. Traveling by train is a refreshing change from driving, and I’m looking forward to soaking in the landscapes along the way.
I’ll arrive at Chicago Union Station late Tuesday afternoon, just after the Texas Eagle pulls in. Unfortunately, I’ll miss my connecting train, so I’ve planned an overnight stay in downtown Chicago. It’ll be the perfect chance to explore a little of the Windy City before continuing my trip.
The next day, I’ll return to Union Station to catch the legendary California Zephyr. This iconic train will take me on a three-day journey across some of the most scenic landscapes in the U.S., ending in San Francisco. Along the way, I’ll meet up with friends in Iowa who plan to greet me at their local station stop. I met them pre-COVID and enjoyed a memorable week hunting deer on their land, so it’ll be great to reconnect.
The highlights of the Zephyr journey promise to be spectacular. I’m particularly excited about passing beside I-70 in the Colorado Rockies, a stretch known for its breathtaking views, and traversing the infamous Donner Pass in California.
Once in San Francisco, I have three days to explore. My itinerary includes a behind-the-scenes Alcatraz tour, visiting the downtown wharf and Pier 39, riding the iconic trolley cars, and wandering through Chinatown. It’ll be a fantastic way to wrap up this incredible sightseeing adventure.
After my stay in San Francisco, I’ll catch a flight back to Dallas on Monday, ready to shift gears and prepare for the next big hunt in Arizona. This journey between hunts is shaping up to be as thrilling as the hunts themselves!
Four Days in San Francisco: A Perfect Adventure
Just back from an incredible four-day trip to San Francisco, I can't wait to share the highlights. Starting with an arrival in Emeryville via the train, I took a bus to the city center and an Uber to my motel, conveniently located just four blocks from the waterfront Wharf area. Everything was so close, and the city’s charm unfolded at every turn.
Day 1: Exploring the Neighborhood
After settling in, I began exploring the nearby areas. The Italian and Chinatown food districts were within walking distance or a $10 Uber ride away. The vibrant streets offered a fusion of cultures, aromas, and sights. Dinner was at Sotto Mare, a seafood lover’s paradise. Watching the chefs work together to craft amazing dishes with crusty bread was as entertaining as the food was delicious.
That evening, I visited Cobbs Comedy Club, just three blocks from my motel. The performances were hilarious, and the atmosphere was electric. I enjoyed it so much that I went back for another round of laughs on my third night.
Day 2: Alcatraz and History
The highlight of my trip was a behind-the-scenes tour of Alcatraz Island. The four-hour experience was packed with fascinating historical stories. Walking through the old prison and hearing about its infamous inmates and daring escape attempts was riveting. This tour is a must for history buffs and anyone intrigued by one of the most infamous prisons in the world.
Day 3: Cable Cars, Trolley Trams, and Sightseeing
To get around the city, I hopped on the iconic cable cars and trolley trams. Cable cars, costing $8 each way, offered a scenic and nostalgic ride, while the trolley trams, at just $2.50 per journey, were a budget-friendly way to explore. These modes of transport gave me a fantastic overview of the city, allowing me to take in the hills, architecture, and vibrant streets.
For dinner, I headed downtown to John's Grill, a legendary restaurant that’s been in business for decades. The food and service were impeccable, and I could see why so many famous customers have dined there. It was a true culinary delight and the perfect way to end a day of sightseeing.
Day 4: Soaking in the City
With everything so accessible, I spent my final day revisiting some favorite spots and discovering new ones. From the vibrant Wharf area to the cultural pockets of the city, every moment was filled with excitement. The food, the people, and the sights made it clear why San Francisco is such a beloved destination.
Reflections on San Francisco
Four days in San Francisco felt just right. I managed to see and do so much, from historical tours and comedy clubs to exploring the city’s food scene and iconic transport. If you're planning a trip, make sure to include stops at Sotto Mare and John's Grill, and don’t miss out on a behind-the-scenes Alcatraz tour.
San Francisco's unique blend of history, culture, and culinary delights will leave you with memories to cherish. Whether you’re here for a short stay or a long one, this city never disappoints.
